What is Coskel University?
COSKEL UNIVERSITY is a fashion label created by Caribbean
American designer Xolani and Japanese artist Machi. Based
in Brooklyn, New York and founded in December 2004,
their first official collection was released in 2005. Soon
after, a 2006 Coskel University fashion show held in SOHO,
NY was highly appreciated by the fashionable Manhattan
crowds, gaining them mainstream recognition and shelf space
in some of the trendiest Manhattan Boutiques. In 2007 CU
inked a sole distribution deal with ZERPHIS Co. ltd. (Kawasaki
City, Kanagawa). Their official Japan debut will be made
in 2008.
The Beginning
Xolani, a Caribbean native was dissatisfied that the only
Caribbean-themed apparel found in boutiques came from the
Bob (Marley) or beaches viewpoint. Longing for more
unique and fashionable items to represent Caribbean culture,
he launched his own fashion label. Machi, the illustrator
behind Coskel University created artwork inspired by Calypso
music and printed it on fabric and by combining these illustrations
with recycled fabric, Xolani and Machi created their first
Coskel University collage t-shirt, these pieces remain
the best sellers of all their produced items. The clothing
eventually became popular among friends and a decision
was made to start a company. Since then the brand's merchandising
has increased gradually to include outer wear, casual shirts
and a denim line.
How we do, what we do and why
Every item in every collection, Men’s or Women’s,
is created by the two designers. The cultural background
of each designer is reflected on their creations; their
vintage feel design is inspired by the colorful culture
and rich nature of the islands of Trinidad and Tobago where
Xolani grew up, and Machi's Japanese craftsmanship and
attention to detail are blended into the pieces. That chemistry
makes CU’s products distinctive and immediately identifiable.
They create casual and comfortable clothes that embody
the eclectic and authentic NYC streets.
"Coskel" is a Trinidadian slang meaning "outlandish
or garish decor or style", and they chose the word
for their brand's name intentionally, to be playful. As
the brand gained popularity, the meaning of "coskel" has
been transformed into "cool, hip, and fashionable" among
Caribbean crowds in New York and Trinidad. It could be
said that the brand has become a cultural movement and
more than a fashion label. The word "university" symbolizes
the place where curious and intellectual young people come
to learn the fashionable laid-back lifestyle.
Coskel University products are favored by musicians,
dancers, stylists and models. CU supports and has collaborated
with the music industry, by creating limited edition items,
hosting live events, making films, or releasing music
CDs. Their products can be found in some of the finest
boutiques in New York City such as "Untitled" "Lounge" "Pieces" and "Couture
Closet". The brand recently started wholesaling to
the Caribbean, Canada and US West Coast. CU has attracted
many fashionistas and they already have many enthusiasts
in Japan who have been anticipating their official debut
to the Japanese market.
